Fast Facts - Edition 321

Are you ready for e-learning?

So you think your organisation is ready for e-learning? Before you start to design your e-learning strategy, it may be useful to conduct an e-learning readiness survey to help gauge how ready your staff, clients and customers are to embrace digital education and training.
The survey will help you to identify an e-learning strategy that aligns with your overall business priorities, ensuring your initiatives are supportable and sustainable, and add value your bottom line.
Getting started – ask some general questions
To understand how your organisation is currently positioned in relation to e-learning, ask yourself:

bullet

What is the current state or positioning of e-learning in your organisation?...WHERE ARE YOU NOW?

bullet

What is your desired state or positioning?…WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE?

bullet

What strategies can help you prepare to adopt e-learning?…HOW WILL YOU GET THERE?

bullet

How will all stakeholders benefit?…WHAT ARE THE OUTCOMES AND HOW WILL YOU MEASURE THEM?

Conduct an in-depth analysis
You can break these questions down to conduct a deeper analysis of your organisation’s e-learning readiness.
Consider key areas such as your cultural readiness, organisational readiness, financial readiness, learner readiness and technical readiness.

Framework to take copyright on the road

No longer just the domain of librarians and resource developers, e-learning has pushed the issue of copyright onto the radar of teachers, trainers and managers of training organisations.
From May to October 2010, the Australian Flexible Learning Framework (Framework  You are now leaving the DEST website  ) will host a series of workshops around the country, giving vocational education and training (VET) practitioners the opportunity to get on top of the key issues around copyright.
The workshops will be conducted by the Framework’s Copyright Officer, Vanessa Tuckfield, who provides expert advice on the issues of copyright and intellectual property for the VET sector and maintains the Framework’s Copyright Kitchen  You are now leaving the DEST website   online resource.

Give credit where it’s due: Student qualification transfer

Students’ requests to use their vocational qualifications as credit towards a university qualification could be managed more effectively, say TAFE and university staff.
Crediting vocational education and training for learner mobility, published by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), provides insight from TAFE and enterprise-based registered training organisations into credit transfer arrangements.

Help us to update your Teacher E-learning Toolkit!

Do you use e-learning in your teaching and training?
If you do, you’ll no doubt be familiar with the VET Teacher E-learning Toolkit  You are now leaving the DEST website   (Toolkit), which sets out the minimum web and desktop functionality requirements that teachers need to support the effective use of e-learning strategies.
To ensure that the Toolkit remains an accurate and up-to-date resource, the Australian Flexible Learning Framework (Framework  You are now leaving the DEST website  ) is calling for vocational education and training (VET) practitioners to respond to an online survey about their use of e-learning tools and applications.
The survey takes only minutes to complete, containing seven questions about which web-based, desktop-support and virtual classroom tools and applications you use, and about your experiences using these tools.
The survey responses will form a vital part of the Framework’s 2010 review and update of the Toolkit.
Complete the survey  You are now leaving the DEST website   or access the current version of the Toolkit  You are now leaving the DEST website  .
E-standards for Training  You are now leaving the DEST website   will also be revising other key e-learning resources, including the m-learning  You are now leaving the DEST website   standards and VET tools for e-learning content  You are now leaving the DEST website   throughout 2010.

New statistical resource taps into training history

Over one million more students undertook publicly funded training in 2008 than in 1981, when 692 000 student were enrolled.
Covering 27 years, a new statistical resource released by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) offers a one-stop shop for historical data and a timeline of important events in the VET sector.
Complemented with apprenticeship and traineeship data stretching back to 1963, the two sets of data tables allow users to gain an overview of training activity over nearly the last half century.

2010 E-learning Benchmarking Surveys – coming soon!

Have your say on e-learning!
The Australian Flexible Learning Framework (Framework  You are now leaving the DEST website  ) is now undertaking its sixth annual national E-learning Benchmarking Survey  You are now leaving the DEST website  , which measures the uptake, use and impact of e-learning in vocational education and training (VET).
This year’s survey will capture information from employers, training providers and VET teachers and trainers, kicking off with the employer survey in May.
Employers and training providers will be contacted directly to participate, and a sample of VET teachers and trainers will be invited to participate by their training providers.
The Framework’s Benchmarking and Research Manager  You are now leaving the DEST website  , Annie Fergusson, said that the survey results will support not only national policy development, but also local VET delivery.
“Access to current and relevant data is a valuable aid in business decision making,” Ms Fergusson said.
“The survey results will allow training providers and practitioners to compare their organisation’s e-learning activities with the rest of the country; find out about the latest e-learning trends; and discover what VET clients think about using e-learning for education and training.”
The findings will be broken down into both national and state and territory results, as well as by provider type and industry. This will help to identify the e-learning trends and demands being made within VET.
The results will be launched at the 2010 National AUSTAFE Conference  You are now leaving the DEST website  , to be held in Sydney from 13-15 October.
Stay tuned to Flex e-News  You are now leaving the DEST website   and the Benchmarking and Research  You are now leaving the DEST website   webpage for updates.
Past survey results are available from the E-learning Indicators  You are now leaving the DEST website   website, including a final report which analyses and breaks down the survey results by response group, demographic and industry area.
The website also contains a range of tools that can assist RTOs to benchmark their own e-learning activity  You are now leaving the DEST website  .
